Course technology takes leadership position by offering over 50 eTextbooks this fall

Course Technology, a division of Thomson Learning and the worldwide leader in computer education publishing, has taken an aggressive position in offering flexible textbook content electronically through eBooks. Course Technology will offer a library of more than 50 of their best-selling textbook titles within eBook platforms beginning in September 2001.

Through partnerships with eBook platform resources, Course Technology will offer eBook solutions for popular software application and information technology concepts, including everything from the Internet, Web development, networking, programming, and management information topics.

According to Joe Dougherty, CEO of Course Technology, Course Technology will help meet the needs of today's students and educators through flexible content. "More and more learning activity flows through some type of computing device, from laptops to dedicated readers. By producing a critical mass of titles in the exciting field of Information Technology, we hope to satisfy the needs of those people who have come to rely on technology as their chief instrument for receiving, studying, researching and manipulating academic information," said Dougherty.

Through their partnership with Rovia, Course Technology is able to offer a secure system for accessing, annotating and sharing copyrighted content on-line. Course Technology's Rovia-enabled etextbooks, which look exactly like the printed version, integrate the entire offering of materials that accompany a textbook – including interactive quizzes, movies and other multimedia enhancements – into a single platform. Utilizing, the RovReaderTM, professors and students can customize their content by annotating text, highlighting key passages, inserting "sticky notes," and bookmarking pages.

"Course Technology has once again delivered on their promise to utilize cutting-edge technology to offer their students and educators flexible content delivery options," said Andres Nannetti, Rovia's chief executive officer. "Rovia is proud to be partnering with Course Technology and looks forward to providing interactive, online versions of their textbooks this fall."

eBooks serve to enhance existing traditional computer courses by providing Course Technology material electronically. In a recent survey of Course Technology customers, 25% of the surveyed group currently use eBooks as an enhancement to a traditional classroom course.
