New directions for creative writing
A new degree course at the University of Bradford is aimed at helping students interested in all aspects of writing to learn more about the practices and processes of creative writing in society.
Unlike many other creative writing courses, the new Creative Writing and Identity degree combines creative writing skills with social sciences.
Course Director Liz Shorrocks says: "This approach helps potential writers understand the context in which creative writing and identity fuse. "Students not only learn how to develop their talents as writers but also how to relate the creative process to issues such as ethnicity, popular culture and gender."
Tutor Yunis Alam, at the University's Department of Social Sciences and Humanities, adds: "Although we are looking forward to working with people who want to develop their creative talents, this degree is not just about learning creative writing techniques.
"Accompanying the creative writing aspect is a sound academic awareness of society. Engaging with social issues helps to refine and further people's understanding of the relationships between authorship, identity and society."
During the course students also learn how to get their work published as well as discussing their ideas with industry professionals such as established publishers, writers and authors.
