ArwenBooks to add MobiPocket to existing formats
ArwenBooks announced today that it is in the process of converting its existing titles to the Mobipocket ebook format.
“The MobiPocket format is extremely versatile.” claims Doug Shaw, ArwenBooks’ partner with responsibility for technical issues. “Adding the MobiPocket format to our existing formats—Microsoft Reader, Adobe Reader and Palm Reader—will make our titles accessible to many more readers.”
MobiPocket, a French company, produces cross-platform ebook readers, which can be used on almost all hand-held computers and PDAs. Users can also view ebooks on PCs and Laptops using the freely available MobiPocket Reader for PCs.
While other manufacturers of ebook readers are moving to improve cross-platform compatibility, MobiPocket maintains a strong lead in this area. MobiPocket’s closest rival when it comes to PDAs and hand-helds is Palm. However, the MobiPocket reader has significantly better graphics handling abilities, and there are fewer restrictions on graphic format for the publisher.
Until now, the major ebook distributors have ignored the MobiPocket format, but that is changing, and within the next few months, readers can expect to see the format being available through many more retailers.
