- Court upholds $20 million jury verdict for willful copyright infringement
The federal district court in Baltimore yesterday upheld one of the highest copyright infringement verdicts in history, a vigorously contested jury verdict of almost $20 million on behalf of Wiley Rein & Fielding client, Lowry's Reports, Inc. "The amendment must ensure that the exceptions to copyright protection do not unreasonably encroach on the commercial exploitation of works", commented Gerd Gebhardt, Chairman of the German Phono Associations. - First enforcement action under Mexico's new, stricter copyright law
Earlier this month, Mexico's Federal Attorney General's Office carried out the first raid in search of unlicensed software under new, stricter laws prohibiting the reproduction of software and other acts of piracy. This action represents the first criminal software enforcement action since Mexico's Penal Code was modified on May 17, 1999, representing a substantial toughening of criminal copyright enforcement. - Futher breakthrough for digital copyright technology in the Flemish Publishing World
Info2clear, which protects digital publications against illegal reproduction via its European Internet Copyright Clearance House, today announced that it has concluded a partnership with the ‘Vlaamse Uitgeversmaatschappij’ for the daily newspaper ‘De Standaard’. Beginning of April, all rights for publications on De Standaard Online will be registered and can be obtained via the copyright infrastructure of Info2clear.
